When Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced his candidacy and pledged to secure the border with Mexico, Lopez Obrador wasted no time in attacking him and labeling his policies as “anti-immigrant.” He called on Hispanics not to support DeSantis or any Republicans, accusing them of persecuting migrants and disrespecting them.
This is not an isolated incident. Lopez Obrador openly declared in March that he would launch an information campaign to influence Mexicans and all Hispanics living and working in the United States. He portrayed Republicans’ efforts to combat drug cartels and fentanyl production as irresponsible and an affront to Mexico’s independence and sovereignty.
He went further, stating that if Republicans did not change their stance, he would actively discourage Mexicans and Hispanics from voting for the party. He labeled Republicans as interventionist, inhumane, hypocritical, and corrupt.
Surprisingly, the Biden administration has remained silent on this blatant election meddling. Despite multiple requests for comment, neither the State Department nor the White House has provided a response. This silence raises questions about the administration’s commitment to addressing foreign interference in our elections.
Lopez Obrador’s campaign is not only an assault on our democracy but also a disrespect for the sovereignty of the United States. The Biden administration’s failure to condemn this interference undermines our electoral process and sends a troubling message to other foreign actors.
