President Donald Trump is shaking things up by signing a document that requests the Senate not ratify a treaty put in place by former President Obama.
Addressing the National Rifle Association, Trump shared that the U.N. Arms Trade Treaty was “badly misguided” and that he would withdraw the U.S. from the agreement.
“Under my administration, we will never surrender American sovereignty to anyone,” Trump said to applause. “We will never allow foreign diplomats to trample on your Second Amendment freedom.”
The treaty regulates international trade in conventional weapons the range of which span from small arms to warships. Obama signed the pact in 2013 but it was never ratified by U.S. lawmakers.
However the NRA and other gun-rights activists slammed the treaty as an infringement on civilian firearm ownership.
The move hopes to boost Trump’s standing with gun owners, an area that Trump has struggled with in light of multiple mass shootings.
