While it’s not unexpected for celebrities to use events like the Oscars to share their political stances, one person took it too far with their attack on President Trump.
After winning the Oscar for best adapted screenplay, filmmaker Spike Lee used his acceptance speech to tear down Trump, even calling for viewers to vote him out of office.
In a speech that had Lee jumping between references of his grandma saving social security checks for schooling to genocide against Native Americans, Lee also said, “The 2020 presidential election is around the corner. Let’s all mobilize. Let’s all be on the right side of history. Make the moral choice between love versus hate. Let’s do the right thing! You know I had to get that in there.”
The speech didn’t go unnoticed by the president.
Trump later tweeted his response, calling out Lee for the ‘racist hit’ and for failing to recognize how the Trump administration has done more for African Americans than any other in recent history.
At the time of this writing, Lee has yet to respond.
