As the first Republican presidential primaries draw near, the candidate field is still up in the air.
However, a hidden race among potential running mates for former President Donald Trump, the early favorite for the nomination, is already taking place.
During a recent Florida speech, Trump mentioned that numerous people are currently “auditioning” to be his running mate.
Unlike other candidates, Trump wants to project a sense of certainty surrounding his campaign, particularly as Florida Governor Ron DeSantis emerges as a strong GOP challenger.
While Trump campaign officials haven’t been openly discussing potential VP picks, several possible running mates have taken advantage of opportunities to be close to Trump at events like CPAC.
Among these individuals are Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene, Elise Stefanik, and Kari Lake, former news anchor, and Arizona gubernatorial candidate.
Insiders suggest that Trump isn’t in a rush to select his running mate, but he has been pondering his options, including choosing a female running mate this time. In 2016, Trump picked Mike Pence, who had a different background and political stance.
Now, Trump is looking for someone more similar to himself.
Many people believe that Elise Stefanik would be the perfect choice for Trump, while Kari Lake won a straw poll at CPAC for the best potential VP.
Even though Lake is focusing on becoming Arizona Governor, she is dedicated to helping Trump return to the White House.
Marjorie Taylor Greene is also considered to be in the running, and Elise Stefanik has been working subtly to gain Trump’s favor.
The decision on Trump’s running mate will have major repercussions for the 2024 election and the Republican Party’s future.
