Elon Musk, the CEO of Twitter and Tesla, has criticized former Trump strategist Steve Bannon after the latter called Musk a “total and complete phony” who is owned by the Chinese Communist Party.
Bannon accused Musk of never criticizing the CCP, which he claimed was “in bed” with the tech billionaire. In response, Musk called Bannon “evil” on Twitter.
In late February, a Chinese Communist Party-owned news outlet warned Musk to stop promoting the Wuhan lab leak theory, stating that Musk was “breaking the pot of China.”
Musk has accused former Chief Medical Advisor to President Biden, Anthony Fauci, of funding gain-of-function research at the Wuhan lab via a pass-through organization called EcoHealth.

Musk’s Tesla has an expansive factory campus in Shanghai, and China is the electric vehicle manufacturer’s second-largest market.
It is not surprising that Elon Musk’s tweets are under scrutiny from the Chinese Communist Party, given the size and importance of China’s market to Tesla’s business.
However, it is important to distinguish between legitimate criticism and attempts to silence dissent.
Similarly, while Musk’s accusations about the Wuhan lab and Anthony Fauci are controversial, they should be subject to scrutiny and investigation rather than censorship.
It is important for the free flow of information to be protected, even if that means occasionally criticizing powerful actors.
Ultimately, Elon Musk and other public figures should be able to express their opinions without fear of retribution, whether from the Chinese Communist Party or any other government or group.
